Sports Injury
Injury occurs when forces exceed your bone, muscle and ligament strength. Most injuries respond to rehabilitation while others require surgery and 3-6 months of rehabilitation.
A direct tackle can rupture ligaments and fracture bones in the foot/ankle/knee requiring urgent surgery; while repetitive impacts from running or a twist in netball can cause wear and tear to ligaments and cartilage that only microscopic surgery will improve.
Surgery is the last treatment option because it can complicate your return path to sport. Surgery changes joint alignment and requires lengthy rehabilitation. This forced rest from activity weakens muscles and they often shrink. There is excessive load placed on the muscles, ligaments and bone which can prolong your return to sport. Bigfoot Podiatrists will prescribe specific footwear and redistribute these forces with orthotics to help speed the rehabilitation process after surgery.
Surgical conditions we have rehabilitated:
1. Ankle ligament reconstruction
2. Iliotibial band surgery (knee)
3. Knee reconstruction
4. Lisfrancs injury (severe foot sprain)
5. Achilles tendon surgery
6. Fractures of the ankle and foot
7. Clubfoot
